Fox Hopyard Golf Club Ranked No. 1 in CT on Golf Advisor Best of 2018 List

Best Of Golf Advisor-FHY

Popular 18 Hole Golf Course Also Ranked No. 24 in USA

EAST HADDAM, CT – The annual Golf Advisor “Best-of 2018” lists were recently released. Included were the review website’s Top 15 Golf Courses in Connecticut and Top 50 in The United States.

East Haddam’s Fox Hopyard Golf Club, popular with locals and New England regional golfers, was named No. 1 in the state and landed at No. 24 in the USA.

Golf Advisor is sister company of The Golf Channel. Courses need a minimum of 10 reviews over the calendar year to be considered for their Best-of rankings. Golf Advisor is the leading source of golf course ratings and reviews by golfers, for golfers. Golf Advisor’s community of golfers share their first-hand experience at thousands of courses worldwide to help other golfers decide where to play their next round.

The company explained that the annual Best-of Lists “are compiled by analyzing the ratings and reviews submitted by members of the golfing community throughout the year. The company uses the Golf Advisor Index logic that weights newer reviews and combines them with a course’s weighted subcategory averages.” The subcategories include: Value, Conditions, Layout, Pace of Play, Friendliness and Off-Course Amenities.

In 2018, Fox Hopyard was rated an average of 4.8 out of 5 Stars on Golf Advisor. In the six scoring subcategories, reviewers rated Fox Hopyard a 4.2 for Value, 4.5 for Pace of Play, and 4.6 for Conditions. The course was rated 4.7 or higher for Amenities, Staff Friendliness, and Layout. 100% of reviewers recommended Fox Hopyard to other golfers in 2018.

The management of the club are proud of their rankings. “It all starts with the golf course; Fox Hopyard is completely unique and invites positive reviews because people have this incredible experience when they visit and can’t help but remark on the layout,” said Brian Cummings, PGA.

The local 18-hole, Par 71, semi-private course covers 519 acres, 123 of which are maintained, and is surrounded by Devils Hopyard State Park acres and has been frequently described as having a layout that “gives you the feel of playing through the mountains of Vermont, the lowlands of Kiawah and the links of Scotland all in one round.”

Mr. Cummings was recently promoted from Head Golf Professional to Director of Golf at Fox Hopyard. He remarked that, “It’s an incredible honor to be named as the number one destination to play in Connecticut and among the top twenty-five in the country, especially in light of the tremendous competition.”

The 4.8 average score bested several other highly-rated CT courses that are located under an hour from Fox Hopyard such as Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam, Wintonbury Hills in Bloomfield, The Blackledge Country Club in nearby Hebron, and the North Course at Lake of Isles located just up the road in North Stonington.

“In 2019, we’re aiming to repeat the number one in Connecticut ranking and move-up the charts in the USA,” said Cummings. “We have the team in place to do it too. Superintendent, Wayne Lagasse, is proud about last year’s positive feedback, but he’s determined to improve on that 4.6-star rating,” he said. “With my new role as Director of Golf, Tom Pannier has been promoted to Fox Hopyard’s Head Golf Professional, and the two of us are fired up to make people feel welcome and ensure that the experience of ‘golfing the fox’ is a fun and enjoyable one.”
